Kites!
April is packed with fun, but one celebration lasts the whole month. April is kite month! When the spring winds start to blow, the sky becomes a giant playground. Above parks, beaches and open fields, you can spot bright kites dancing in the air. Some look like diamonds, some like animals, and some are so big they look like they could carry you away! Both kids and grown-ups grab their strings and send their kites soaring.
Kites aren’t just pretty—they have a story to tell. Long ago, people believed kites could carry messages up into the sky. In some places, tiny flags were tied to the tail, and people would write wishes or prayers on them. Imagine your thoughts and messages floating way up high, riding the wind.
The first kites were invented thousands of years ago in China. Back then, they weren’t just toys, they were tools. Soldiers used kites made of silk and wood to scare their enemies. Some even carried fireworks that exploded in the sky with loud booms and bright flashes to scare enemy troops
Today, kites are all about fun. People fly them for games, races, and even to do tricks. There are competitions where kites zoom, spin, and dance in the air like performers in a show. Some people even use kites to skim across the water in a sport called kitesurfing. It’s like flying and surfing at the same time!
And here’s a fun fact: kites even helped scientists make discoveries. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin flew a kite during a storm to prove that lightning is electricity. Later on, the Wright brothers used kites to help them learn how to build their first airplanes. Who knew a simple kite could help people learn how to fly.
